Orkut – Ultimately in Business

Posted in @sansor, Computer, Daily Stuff, Laptops, News, Orkut, Software, Uncategorized by Sanjay Kumar on June 28, 2006

Orkut In Business

Well, Orkut  one of the biggest hit of GOOGLE, now in business. It was the most awaited thing for me atleast. I was expecting that someday it will come with the come advertisement and here they broke the ice with FIFA Fever. At present there are about 21,656,503  users of orkut. Already there are some communities where advertisement of the company is started but they were free of cost. May be this time they will be watched by the orkut admin.

Right now there is only one advertisement at the bottom of your profile but I expect that soon it will be increased too much.

Well orkut gives us a lot, so hopefully it wont irritates the users. ORKUT IS VERY ADDICTIVE. Now scribbling in other scrapbook is much more popular that users forgot to about mailing and chatting thing. Well it doesn’t replace the chatting software but still it really made users very addictive and dependent on orkut.

Punishment for using AOL

Posted in Computer, Fun, News, Software, Windows by Sanjay Kumar on June 22, 2006

Source : http://www.nbc10.com/news/9406462/detail.html

Its really very funny. How cheap is this activity? How one can do this to keep their customer. You may be the next victim. So beware!!! Bad farewell for AOL users :( . Go through the talk [one liners].

<snip>

An incredible video from CNBC shows an AOL customer trying to cancel his account, but a phone rep won't let him do it. What customer Vincent Ferrari got when he tried to cancel his account was a lot of frustration.

It took him 15 minutes waiting on the phone just to reach a real, live person. And, what happened next was recorded by Ferrari on audio and lasted about four minutes.

Interview with Program Manager of IE

Interview with Program Manager of IE

Background of the Program Manager Christopher Vaughan is a Lead PM on the Internet Explorer team over at Microsoft since 11 years. He has been involved in every OS release since Windows 95 and every IE release since IE 2 or 3.
How is IE 7 going to make things better for security?
Security is our biggest single area of investment in IE7. For all the work we did in the UI and platform, none of that outweighs all the security changes we made.
Remember too that IE7 is built from the same code base as Windows Vista which has received a huge amount of scrutiny
It seems, they haven't only read the code of firefox (like tab browsing idea) but also the extension wrote by other user.Ohoo, I am doubtful about vista too. Though you know all those shading effects are already being used since years by linux users.

Learning lessons from IE 6
1-We’ve seen how other browsers have been attacked via IDN and think we have a solution that protects our users.2-We’ve changed our UI in many ways to make it easier3-No one should have to be a security expert to understand what’s safe and what’s not.

3.1-Feedback Database

1.Is it about firefox?? What about the all the frequent crashes of IE.
2-Not again!! All UI features seems to me like firefox features. Is it correct??3-One more feature on Firefox is gone.

3-Haha…I still remember it sends the error feedback even when it is not connected to internet. :D

How much more secure it is than IE6
1-Hopefully, the need for security response will be lower, the severity of threats will be lower on average, and our turnaround on fixing the issues will be faster But it will still be there, isn't it?? Thanks to firefox I never ever had a complain with it.

Any plans to start incorporating more managed code into IE
1-For a variety of reasons, native code is where we’ll stay for a while. Why??

Has there been any investigation or plans for a privilege-separated browser architecture?
On Windows Vista, IE runs by default in Protected Mode, which is the marketing name for “IE running with lowest possible privileges.”On top of that, users already will be running as regular users (not administrators!) by default, so even if a malicious site does trick the user into running an app, the user by default doesn’t have the ability to affect any part of the system except for their own user profile & files. That is something good to hear about. I really appreciate this idea.
Cant say, but is this idea come from the OS artitechture of linux which is being applied to IE arch ? Previously We used to run everything in windows as admin but in linux we never do so. This is just for the protection of important data in linux. Same thing is done for IE I suppose.

Do you think the browsing model where active content is executed in the user’s browser broken?
I want to point out that every browser has an extensibility model of some sort, and they all have security & usability challenges to overcome. It’s our job to draw a line between those two extremes, and that’s what we’ve been doing for the last few years – refining that line. Well said. But how much you have achieved till now??

What happened with that Microsoft Internet Explorer JavaScript Window() Vulnerability that was improperly diagnosed as a Denial of Service (DoS) bug and turned out to be remote code execution? After that experience, does the IE team consider all remotely triggerable memory related crashes as high risk issues?
Every memory related crash is even more thoroughly investigated now. I’m always blown away by the technical prowess of folks around here – and their persistence. No one around here gives up easily on reported flaws until we’re sure confident in our analysis. Recruit some Linux geek, Your problem will be solved. Your folks has already given up. Few cases like Martin Taylor is still to happen. [Martin Taylor-the corporate vice president of Windows Live and MSN marketing. He left Microsoft today.]

On the subject of browser crashes, have you run IE6/7 against HD Moore’s Hamachi? If so, how did they fair? If not, what tools does the IE team use to test browsers?
We run IE7 against all the tools we can find. We use the ones published publicly as well as our own home-grown tools (the PREFIX filters, part of Visual Studio, being one notable tool we’ve released to the world). Just fix this thing, It irritates a lot. Few years back I suffered a lot due to this. But now I am happy that I have FIREFOX.,for free.

Is there a clean delineation of security responsibility between the IE team and the underlying components (e.g. image parsers)?
Customers don’t know, don’t care, and shouldn’t have to worry about how we’re organized internally. Rightly said, thank god. It is not open source or we would have got to see the "great coders coding of MS".

Christopher, we want to thank you for your time.
IE team is working hard to make IE7 the best browser for our users. It needs Innovation, copying wont work.

Mounting NTFS Partition on Linux

Posted in @sansor, Computer, Daily Stuff, Laptops, Linux, Linux vs Windows, Open-Source, Software, Windows by Sanjay Kumar on June 13, 2006

This how-to describes how to mount an NTFS partition in linux so that the user can access files on the NTFS partition from linux normally.

1. Login as root by running from a terminal su followed by typing the root password.

2. Create a directory in your /mnt folder. This can be done by running mkdir /mnt/X where X is the name of the directory where the NTFS partition will be mounted.

3. Run fdisk -l and note the name of the device file for the NTFS partition. Lets say the device file name is found to be /dev/Y.

4. Open the file /etc/fstab in your favorite text editor.

5. On a new line at the bottom of the file, add the line

/dev/Y /mnt/X ntfs users,owner,ro,umask=000 0 0

where X is the name of the directory you created in step 2.

6. Save and quit the file /etc/fstab

7. Then run mount -a and the NTFS partition will be mounted. It will also be mounted automatically after reboot so that you do not have to do anything after you reboot.
